Proxy Dictionary

Welcome to the Proxy Dictionary, a list of proxy terminology and definitions that we have compiled to help demystify the world of free proxy sites.

Anonymous Browsing

Anonymous browsing is the act of using a proxy to browse the Internet. Every web site you visit captures information about your browser, IP address, and more. A proxy makes all of your requests on your behalf, so the web site you are viewing only sees the IP address and information for the proxy server, not your PC. In this way, you are browsing the Web anonymously by obfuscating information about your PC. ^ Top

CGI Proxy

CGI Proxy is an HTTP proxy script written in Perl. It is freely available and allows a proxy webmaster to run a robust web proxy. CGI Proxy is free for non-commercial use, and the author asks users to establish a deal for commercial use. ^ Top

Firewall

In the world of computer networking, a firewall is a piece of hardware or software that prevents access based on security policies. While many types of firewalls exist, network firewalls include many different types of security systems with the primary goal of controlling access to network elements. A network administrator will use a firewall to prevent access both inside and outside a network. Often this prevents users within the network from accessing resources. A proxy can be used as a firewall, and in certain cases can be used to bypass or sleuth a firewall. ^ Top

PHProxy

PHProxy is a PHP based HTTP proxy script. Similar to CGIProxy, it is a web based proxy program, however it is built using a collection of PHP script as opposed to a single Perl file. PHProxy uses the GNU General Public License, so it can be freely distributed and modified. ^ Top

Proxy Server

A proxy server is a service provided by a server which allows indirect requests for other network resources. A proxy server accepts requests from either private or public sources (depending on the system administrator's configuration and the intent of the proxy), obtains the resources, and relays the request back to the client. A proxy server can be used as a firewall, administration tool, or privacy enhancher / anonymous browsing tool. ^ Top

Web Proxy

A web proxy is a proxy server that is accessible through a web browser (via HTTP) and provides anonymous web-based browsing to users. There are many web proxies available, some are free proxy servers, some require a low monthly or one-time fee for use, and some are for private groups or parties. ^ Top
